Workshop is the backbone of the Technical Education. It imparts Practical Training to the students of different branches of Engineering. In our esteemed Polytechnic, Workshop plays a paramount role in moulding, shaping and preparing the students to face the future challenges in the field of technology. The Course structure of Polytechnic is designed in the manner of 50% Practical and 50% Theory classes to cater the supervisory level of skilled hand in the field work of the country.
Our Workshop engaged in imparting practical training, consists of different trade under different Shops like Carpentry Shop, Fitting Shop, Black Smithy Shop, Pattern Making Shop, Turning Shop, Machine Shop, Electric Shop, Plumbing Shop, Painting Shop, R.C.C. & Masonry Shop and Welding shop. Our Junior Instructor’s are to conduct the practical classes in respect of overall demonstrations. The Assistant Instructors are always in the midst of the students during practical classes helping them to be familiarized with the tools and equipments of the particular trade by proper handling and thus the students get chances to enhance their self confidence. We all know that the main aim of our Government in producing Engineers & Technicians is to face the growing needs of various industries and thus to uplift our standard of economy. As we know the lack of creativity, imagination and self confidence industrialization will remain a dream only. Here lies the importance of Workshop to mould a student in all possible ways to face the challenge of a new era confidently.
The roll of Workshop is not confined only in imparting practical training to the students but its duty is also to look after the other needs of the institution like the Mechanical or Electrical repairs and all these repairing and maintenance works depend upon the practical facilities available in Polytechnic. Hence the Instructors are also to work willingly in addition to their normal duties as and when required for the better interest of the institute. There are Electrical and Mechanical Foremen in Shillong Polytechnic. A Foreman is said to be the backbone of any industry. The Workshop as a whole is under the direct control of the Workshop Superintendent.
